St. Pius X College’s Physics and Mathematics students find out

“How civil engineersmake Belfast work” with QUB.

On Friday 7th October, three A2 students who study Physics and Maths travelled to Queens University, Belfast under the watchful eyes of Mr Doyle [Maths teacher] and Mrs Cooper [Physics teacher]. The purpose of the students visit was to gain an insight into the work of a Civil Engineer and how Civil Engineers have changed Northern Ireland over time. The students experienced an opportunity to attend a lecture on Civil Engineering, see how our water gets treated before it enters our homes and how the Lagan Weir gates can be controlled. All of this before lunch made everyone hungry!

After lunch the students explored the free standing dome in Victoria Square and visited a construction site where Northern Ireland’s biggest Allstate building is currently under construction. The big finale was going back to the Civil Engineering building and eating Domino’s pizza until their hearts were content.

The aim of this trip was to show pupils how STEM subjects can be combined together and used outside the classroom and applied to a civil engineer’s everyday life.

This trip not only opened the student’s perspective to Civil Engineering, but it also provided the opportunity to see where their skills could be applied across the variety of Civil Engineering jobs.

All 3 students really enjoyed the trip and it has definitely raised their awareness for Civil Engineering and how we wouldn’t be able to live life without it.
