STEM trip to QUB

St.Pius X College Year 14 Physics and Maths students visit Windsor Park as part of
Civil Engineering event hosted by Queen’s University, Belfast.

St. Pius X College’s Physics and Mathematics students find out “How civil engineers make Belfast work” with QUB.

On Friday 9th October four A2 pupils travelled to Belfast under the watchful eyes of Mrs Love [Maths teacher and Miss Smyth Physics teacher] to get an insight into the work of a Civil Engineer and how Civil Engineers have helped shape Belfast into the city that it is today. Pupils got the opportunity to explore the free standing dome in Victoria Square, visit Windsor Park after Ireland’s victory over Greece and see how the water in Belfast is cleaned and monitored. The aim of this trip was to show pupils how STEM subjects are used and applied outside of the classroom in different environments. It also raised pupil awareness of the numerous career opportunities in Civil Engineering throughout Northern Ireland. Overall, it was a fantastic trip which highlighted how STEM subjects are used across a range of different jobs both within a local and global setting andthat no town or city can progress without them.
