St. Pius X College teacher: Microsoft Innovative Expert Educator 2015

Educators and schools recognised as global leaders in using technology to transform education

Microsoft Ireland is proud to announce that Mr G Duffy, (Head of Post 16), from St. Pius X College, Magherafelt has been selected to take part in its Innovative Expert Educator program for a second year.

In March 2013 Mr Duffy represented Ireland in Barcelona at the Microsoft Global Forum. Mr Duffy's learning activity 'Carbon Footprint Online' was showcased by Microsoft as an award winning innovative and collaborative online virtual course.  ‘Carbon Footprint Online’ links with local primary schools and other schools abroad to complete interactive activities on the theme of carbon footprint.  In 2012 the course also won the national Impact NI People's Choice Award.

This year, the Expert Educator program selected 800 educators from 45,000 applicants to be part of an exclusive global community of education leaders who use technology to positively impact learning and student outcomes. To be selected, educators undergo a rigorous application process and the winners are selected by a worldwide group of judges who used a broad set of criteria to assess the educators’ evidence of learning, collaboration, knowledge construction and critical thinking among other things.  St. Pius X College is no stranger to Microsoft. The college is currently a ‘Pathfinder’ school. Additionally in 2008, Mrs Eileen McStocker, (Head of ICT), represented Ireland as an Innovative Teacher in the Microsoft Global Forum in Hong Kong.

Expert Educators work closely with Microsoft to lead innovation in education, advocate and share their experiences with effective uses of technology in education with their peers and policy makers. In addition, they mentor other educators and help train them in education technologies and Microsoft products and tools.

To be considered for an Expert Educator, educators must demonstrate a commitment to innovation and the ability to overcome obstacles in preparing students to be 21st century learners. Educators are selected based on their innovation, leadership skills and effective use of technology for better learning and student outcomes.

“I am thrilled to have been reselected as one of Microsoft’s Expert Educators!” said Mr Duffy. “I look forward to making the most of the mentoring and learning opportunities that are now available to me, as well as showcasing the use of cutting edge technology by all staff in St. Pius X College. Our college has a long history of innovation in ICT and is the leading ICT college in Northern Ireland, as demonstrated by the scale of our accolades with Intel, Microsoft and Naace. All of our staff, teaching and non-teaching, fully engage and embrace third millennium ICT driven teaching to ensure our students receive a first class digital education. Being part of the Microsoft Expert Educator community will help me to increase learning outcomes for my students and provide opportunities for parental engagement using ICT as a pedagogical tool”.
