John O’Dowd visits St Pius X College

Education Minister John O’Dowd has visited St Pius X College in Magherafelt.

While at the school the Minister engaged with pupils as they took part in a range of extra-curricular and cross-community activities, including a literacy club and shared learning with pupils from neighbouring schools.

Speaking about the visit, the Minister said: “St Pius X College has been part of the fabric of the community in Magherafelt for around half a century, delivering quality education to many thousands of local young people in that time.

“The school is now building on this strong foundation by taking innovative approaches to education, whether that be through the use of digital technologies or by collaborating with other local schools to help break down community barriers.

“St Pius X College is at the forefront of e-learning, having recently secured a prestigious Microsoft Pathfinder award, one of only 64 schools globally to do so. Pupils here also participate in a number of cross-community projects, funded by the International Fund for Ireland and the Atlantic Philanthropies, that seek to build partnerships across traditional divides and establish long term sharing of resources and learning.

“I am also encouraged that the school is on track to meet the requirements of the Entitlement Framework from September. This will ensure pupils can choose from a wider range of courses at Key Stage 4 and post-16 levels, further helping them find the learning path that is best suited to their career aspirations.”

The Minister concluded: “St Pius X College has much to be proud of in how it delivers education. I commend Principal Jackie Bartley and the Board of Governors on their leadership and whole staff body for their continuing hard work and commitment that is yielding such positive outcomes for local young people.”
