Biodiversity Project

Collaborative project between St. Pius X College and Rainey Endowed School gains acclamation from Minister Michelle O'Neill.

The Minister for Agriculture Michelle O'Neill visited St. Pius X College on Wednesday 13th March to view the work of a collaborative project on local biodiversity carried out between year 10 pupils from St. Pius X College and Rainey Endowed School.  Ciaran Burns from St. Pius X College alongside Daniel Rainey and Stuart Thompson from Rainey Endowed School have carried out extensive work to promote an awareness of local biodiversity among young people and their primary concern is to maintain the conservation of the Tree Sparrow. The boys mentors' are Mrs Claire Hassan from St. Pius X College, Mr Raymond Kirkpatrick and Mrs Jenny Greenaway from Rainey Endowed school.  Minister O'Neill watched the boys give a presentation to local primary school pupils and said

"I have enjoyed hearing the findings of this interesting presentation and I am very impressed by the pupils' commitment to raising awareness of biodiversity issues to the other local pupils who are here today.

"I would like to commend Ciaran, Daniel and Stuart on the work they have carried out in completing this project about tree sparrows and Lough Beg.  My Department aims to enhance biodiversity, through the delivery of Agri-environment schemes.  Farmers taking part in these schemes can manage habitats on their land to benefit farmland birds such as the tree sparrow.

"Ciaran, Stuart and Daniel, along with their teachers should be complimented for their work in creating an awareness of the importance of biodiversity in their respective schools and, in the wider local community."
