Environmental Science Competition 2014

On the morning of Friday 7th March, St. Pius X College hosted the fifth ‘Environmental Science Competition’. This annual event provides a forum for feeder primary schools to showcase their projects which display STEM links and the key skills of ICT and Communication. This year’s competition was supported by the teachers and primary 6 pupils of Anahorish, St. Trea’s Ballymaguigan, St. Patrick’s Loup, New Row Castledawson, Holy Family Magherafelt and Spires Integrated Magherafelt. The college was particularly delighted and honoured to have the presence of Ms L Armour [ETI] to judge the ‘Overall Best Project’. Miss Aisling Gribbin [Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful] judged the ‘Most Creative Project’ whilst the judging of ‘Application of Number, Using Communication and Using ICT’ was undertaken by Ms J Bartley [Principal], Mr C Quinn [Literacy Co-ordinator] and Mrs E Mc Stocker [ICT Co-ordinator] respectively. Miss P Hanson [Head of Science] congratulated the pupils and their teachers on what was an absolutely fantastic range of excellent projects from all the participants. Through STEM funding each primary school received a Kindle Fire HD and an electronic bookmarker. The winners for each category were:

The Sean Mc Auley Cup for Overall Best Project – St. Trea’s

Moss View Potatoes Shield for the Most Creative Project – Anahorish

Den Hill Cup for Application on Number – New Row

The Mc Mahon Cup for Communication – St. Patrick’s

The Elk Wine Bar Cup for Using ICT – Spires Integrated and Holy Family.
