St Pius X recognises staff health

The Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF) recently visited St Pius X College, Magherafelt as part of the school’s health and wellbeing day.  This one day event offered a wide range of health promotion services and information to all staff.

Anne Devlin, Cancer Prevention Officer, Ulster Cancer Foundation said “The Ulster Cancer Foundation’s input with local workplaces has increased dramatically over the past ten years as workplaces recognise that their staff are their biggest asset.

She continued “It was great to see how interested the St Pius Xstaff were in taking on board UCF’s recommendations to improve their health.  We commend the school for recognising the health of their staff as a top priority and we thank them for their generous donation of £150 towards our life saving work”.

U-14 Camogs are crowned Co Derry champions

The U-14 Camogs were recently crowned Co Derry champions after a hard fought competition in Greenlough.  They competed against St Mary’s Clady, St Paul’s Kilrea and St Colm’s Draperstown and emerged victorious in every game.  The St Pius girls played their hearts out and some excellent passages of play and superb skill ensured the trophy was brought back to Magherafelt.  Niamh McGuckin played a captains role by taking some excellent scores and motivating her side to victory.  Coach Geraldine O’Neill stated ‘I am delighted for the girls as I know how much hard work they have put in and how much this trophy means to them.  I look forward to carrying this team through to compete in next years Ulster Junior Championship’.  Team – Amy Quinn, Sarah Cassidy, Sarah Mulholland, Emer Stinson, Kate Gallagher, Shona McGrogan, Leona Browne, Sinead Conlon, Niamh Duffin, Shannon McCrystal, Niamh McGuckin (c), Niamh Bell, Michaela Diamond, Sorcha Larkin, Eimear McElwee, Aimee Devlin, Niamh Cushley, Katie McGuckin, Brigid McMullan, Nuala McVey, Shannon Bell.

St. Pius X College – U16 Ladies Football Derry Champions  2006

St. Pius under 16 ladies footballers were crowned Derry champions on Friday 15th December when they overcame a strong St. Mary’s Limavady at Castledawson. The game was expected to be very close, considering the match between the two in the group stages of the competition was decided by a late goal from St. Pius’. The Magherafelt girls fielded without influential forward Noeleen Mallon and appeared to be missing her services when Limavady had the ball in the net twice before St. Pius’ registered. St. Pius’ came to life at this stage and began a scoring blitz which saw Limavady failing to score for the remainder of the half. The St. Pius’ defence, led by team captain Kerrie Graham, became almost unbreachable and the turning point of the half came when half-forward Martine Crilly made a superb diving block and carried the ball 30 yards before rifling home an unstoppable shot. Crilly rippled the Limavady net moments later but the referee had already awarded a penalty to the South Derry side. Maeve Wylie who was on the top of her game saw her firmly struck penalty whiz narrowly wide of the post. St. Pius’ bounced back from this setback and Noirin Henry’s unerring accuracy from frees helped them go in at the break 1-05 to 2-0 up.

The Limavady girls showed some of the form that helped them reach the final early in the second period when a flowing move led to a well taken point. However, this again seemed to bring the whole St. Pius’ team to life as they began to play some exhilarating football which even the staunchest of Limavady supporters applauded. Again Noirin Henry was flawless from frees and the whole team worked brilliantly as a unit. The game was really sealed when Ardboe’s Rebekah Forbes broke through the Limavady defence before executing a textbook finish low into the corner of the net. The coating was put on the terrific St. Pius’ victory when young substitute Nicola Crilly lobbed the Limavady keeper moments before the final whistle. St. Pius’ finished the game on the right side of a flattering 3-13 to 2-01 score line.

The St. Pius’ work rate and teamwork clearly were the key ingredients in this success and a solid defensive performance from each member of a resolute defence made it extremely difficult for a very dangerous Limavady forward line. Noirin Henry and Emma McIvor were dominant at midfield and the business-like performance of the entire forward line was a joy to watch. St. Pius’ now look forward to a meeting in Ulster with the winners of the Antrim championship and will clearly need another top performance to progress in the competition. St Pius’ coach.  A huge thank you must go to the two team coaches Rosie Crilly and Kevin Coary.
