STEM Conservation Competition

THE LAUNCH OF STEM SCIENCE CONSERVATION COMPETITION FOR LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN ST PIUS X COLLEGE

On Friday 16th April 2010, St. Pius X College hosted a STEM related Science Competition organised by Miss Pat Hanson [Head of Science]. The theme for the competition was Conservation.  The judges for the competition were Dr Colette Murphy [Senior Education Lecturer at Q.U.B.] and the college staff Mrs Eileen Mc Stocker [ICT Coordinator], Mrs Sinead Ball [Numeracy Coordinator] and Mr Ciaran Quinn [Literacy Coordinator].  Also in attendance were Mrs Una O’ Kane [Board of Governors], Mr Sean McAuley, Mrs Mary McMahon, Mr Richard Mc Keague and Mr Charlie McPeake [trophy sponsors].

Each Primary Schools in attendance received a Flip Camcorder and Tripod along and a  native tree species to plant at their school.

 

The winners for the following categories were:

  • Derrychrin, Ballinderry – Dens Hill Cup for Using Number

  • Spires Integrated, Magherafelt – The Elk Wine Bar Cup for Using ICT

  • Holy Family, Magherafelt – The McMahon Cup for Communication

  • Holy Family, Magherafelt – The Sean McAuley Cup for overall winners.

 

After the presentation of prizes and trophies all the Primary School teachers and pupils took part in a Science Quiz using the College’s ICT Acti Vote Note Pads linked to an Inter Active White Board.  A thoroughly worthwhile and enjoyable morning was had by all who attended.
